Harbor at the Headwaters of Prosperity: Albany's 18th century Stockade
and Waterfront
March 22, from 12:15 to 1:15 - Wednesday

Location: In the Librarian's Room in the State Library, 7th floor of the CulturalEducation Center, Empire State Plaza. Albany, New York,

Details: Excavations at this site in downtown Albany during the summer of 1999 revealed the 1750s stockade, two 300-foot bulkheads that represent the city’s earliest waterfront expansions in the late 18th century, and a variety of 19th-century structures. In addition to the remains of some of the earliest waterfront features in the city, the archeological site contained foundations of warehouses and other structures that represent the city’s late 18th- and 19th-century prosperity. The archeology of this single city block represents widespread changes that are central to the history of New York including Albany’s transition from a strategic military staging point to a central transhipment point along the Erie Canal and the corresponding change in the surrounding region from a military frontier to a prosperous trade corridor.

Details: The presentation will discuss the how, what and why of modern archaeology, including using flotation to recover small things like beads, seeds and charcoal, and using radiocarbon dating to date the charcoal and the sites. It will relate these techniques to ongoing work in the Wallkill River Valley and discuss reasons why the next great discovery into the search for the origins of the First Americans very well may come from right here in the Wallkill River Valley. Recently the Town of Minisink enacted a Cultural Resource Management ordinance. The presentation will discuss the results of the first two site examined under this ordinance, the Historian and Board Sites, including details on the first radiocarbon dates obtained for the town and prehistoric plant remains that were recovered.
